Soil Room Technician

The Aurora site opened in 1997, and is located just 30 minutes south of Portland, Oregon in the beautiful Willamette Valley. The site has 37 acres of greenhouse and 3 acres of field space. In 2013, we added a 3-acre State-of-the-art glass greenhouse which has allowed the facility to repurpose 40,000 gallons of water every day helping to reduce our carbon footprint.

JOB SUMMARY


The Soil Room Technician is responsible for preparing, mixing, and maintaining high-quality soil blend used for transplanting. This position ensures that all soil media meet required specifications for plant health, growth and production schedules, while maintaining cleanliness, organization, and compliance with safety and quality standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Prepare and mix soil blends according to established formulas and production needs.
  • Monitor soil quality, including moisture, texture, and pH levels, to meet plant requirements.
  • Operate soil handling equipment such as mixers, conveyors, loaders, and sterilizers safely and efficiently.
  • Coordinate transplanting schedules to align with overall transplanting.
  • Maintain detailed records of soil mix batches, ingredients and adjustments.
  • Assist in inventory management of soil components.
  • Collaborate with growers and production teams to ensure soil quality and components.
  • Maintain and clean soil mixing equipment in line with TPM standards.
  • Provide training and guidance to backup soil room operators.
  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Support Transplanting operations and assist with Forklift as needed.

COMPETENCIES


  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow soil blend recipes accurately.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Excellent communication skills, in person, verbal and written.
  • Strong teamwork skills to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Proficient in basic math and computer skills.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required: additional coursework in horticulture, or agricultural.
  • Certified or qualified to operate forklift, and JCB loader.
  • Experience in nursery, greenhouse, or agricultural production environment preferred.
  • Ability to operate and maintain soil mixing and handling equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Work long hours as needed during busy season, including weekends.
  • Continuously walk, stand, bend, kneel (and remain working below knee-level) as well as reaching overhead, and from side to side for long periods of time.
  • Work indoors and outdoors, in seasonal temperatures and conditions.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds in an environment that is often hot.

PAY RANGE


$21 - $24 per hour

  • $17-$18.50 Per Hour
  • $25.50 - 27.50
